You might not ever have heard of Goerlitz, Germany but I guarantee you know the place. Goerlitz is one of the favorite cities for filmmakers and numerous well-known American and German productions have been filmed here. But that’s not the only reason to visit Goerlitz!

Goerlitz is located right on the Polish-German border. Goerlitz and Zgorzelec, over the river in Poland, used to be one city but were divided after World War II.

Görlitz is one of the very few cities in that part of Europe that weren’t damaged during World War II, hence it’s rich in monuments and buildings in various architectural styles.

There are 13th-century churches, a 16th-century town hall, and a 19th-century department store. Goerlitz is considered to be one of the best-preserved cities in the whole of central Europe - with thousands of heritage buildings. Enjoy!

Why Travel in Spring 2021

Dreaming of traveling next year again? Choose spring for pleasant weather and fewer crowds! It’s always a beautiful time when parks and gardens are blooming and cities return to life again.

The first things that come to mind when traveling in Europe in spring:

 • Airfares and hotels are cheaper
 • Rental cars are easier to reserve at bargain prices.
 • Museums, castles, and restaurants are not so crowded

Last but not least, the locals are home. There are very few tourists clogging the streets and their favorite restaurants and now’s the time they can eat and play in peace – it’s more favorable for travelers and locals alike!

Merano, Southern Tyrol, Italy:
Between the end of March and the beginning of April, the area around Meran appears at their best. In spring, Vinschgau, Meran, and Eisacktal take place in a really inebriating natural spectacle with thousands of pink and white blossoms.

Early season visitors to Meran and environs should head for the castle park where the Empress Sissi was accustomed to stroll – the 'Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle' are a must, as nowhere else in South Tyrol can be found such a fragrant, colorful and rich variety of flowers. Those who decide to head for the hills and go hiking will soon reach the vivid Alpine meadows of the Tschögglberg, the Vigiljoch, or the Texel Group nature park. Restaurant tables and chairs await you on the terraces, umbrellas are set up, the weather is fine. When you are eating outdoors, with views of the mountains and apple-orchards, South Tyrolean food tastes even better!

Paris, France:
There’s something special about this city of romance and gastronomic delights come springtime. Making it definitely worth Traveling in Europe in the spring!
The charm of Paris in the spring is just overwhelming. From picnicking in front of the Eiffel Tower to wandering the city’s many impressive gardens, dappled wanderings by the banks of the Seine, sunny mornings over a fresh croissant and café au lait, husky eves over Pernod and red wine – surrounded by blossoming chestnut groves, blooming Jardins, and truly breathtaking blue spring days.

No waiting lines: The Louvre and the Eiffel Tower are not nearly as crowded as in summertime. A big plus of spring in Paris is the 'Nuit des Musee' or 'Night of Museums'. It’s when museums, art galleries, and cultural centers throughout the city open their doors for one night in May so visitors can experience some of the best art in the world in a very different way: totally free and very late at night.
However, there are many other beautiful, and often ancient cities in France to visit in spring, such as Toulouse, Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Bordeaux, or Biarritz.

Seville, Spain:
The exciting Andalusian capital explodes with life in the spring, cafes, and restaurants buzz with energy. Orange blossoms and white citrus leaves bloom, and the cultural calendar kicks into a whole new gear.
Feria de Abril: The Seville Fair traditionally starts two clear weeks after Semana Santa, in a huge area in Los Remedios. This is a week of dancing, drinking, eating, and socializing, with late nights – or all-nighters. The sheer size of the April Fair’s spectacle is extraordinary. From around midday until early evening Sevilla society parades around the fairground in carriages or on horseback. Another pleasure is a Tapas Crawl: Spend a day people watching whilst nibbling away at fine food in the tapas bars. There are even organized Tapas Tours.

Dublin, Ireland
The best time to visit Ireland - weather-wise - is in April, May, and June. I did not know this, but on my first visit during April there was beautiful weather, seven days of sunshine!
Even travelers visiting Dublin in March will have plenty to capture their attention. For example, the famous two-mile-long St. Patrick’s Festival Parade. The celebrations span the entire weekend.

If you want to escape the crowds: The K Club, a 5-star country manor located 30 minutes outside Dublin. With a vintage 1936 Jaguar house car, curated whiskey tastings, and horseback trails and a golf course on 550 acres.
For smaller budgets:
- Swallows Rest Garden Apartment, Wicklow
- the Chester Beatty Inn, Ashford or
- Halpin's Town House Bed & Breakfast, Wicklow
They are all located in or around Wicklow, close to the Wicklow Mountains National Park, not even an hour's drive from Dublin.

With or without kids, spring is the perfect time to travel and sample nature and culture in Europe. Let's travel again in 2021.

Photo Impressions Rostock on the Baltic Sea

Rostock - an 800-year-old city on the Baltic Sea in Northern Germany
Rostock is not just a place that is close to the Baltic Sea and has many different shopping opportunities to offer. If you are interested in art and culture, the museums in Rostock and the surrounding area will be perfect for you. Whether you are interested in maritime history, artwork or concerts, the city has lots to offer.

In 1990 I visited Rostock for the first time. It was shortly after the “wall” fell and East and West Germany were about to reunite. I had a full day to wander the streets of Rostock and I was amazed about the beautiful buildings.

Despite their former glory, those buildings were in a desolate condition. All of them were in dire need of repair and all of them were painted in an ugly grey-brown. However, the architectural “bones” were grandiose and I could very well imagine that even paint jobs could transfer these buildings into beautiful gems.

In early February, thirty years after my first visit, I had a chance to come back to Rostock.
I arrived by train from Berlin on a rainy, dark evening. Not good to present the cities’ attractive sites. But still: the short trip by tram and a one-minute walk to my hotel showed this Hanseatic trading city in the most fantastic way - despite the rain. I was excited to get up early the next morning and see it all in the - predicted - sunshine. I must admit, I was overwhelmed by the beauty I discovered. The city, its people, and skilled artisans helped to restore this jewel on the Baltic Sea.

The old town of Rostock can easily be walked. Stepping out of my hotel, I discovered the first gem of this city, the archetypal North German Brick Gothic church, which hasn’t changed much since the 14th century. The church tower was bathed in sun, and I was able to shoot a lovely photo (see below). A bit further lies an even older church that goes back to 1252 and was rebuilt in the Brick-Gothic style around the 1350s.

After Rostock gained city rights in 1218 the city expanded quickly. In 1265 when three once separate suburbs became interlinked, this market square became the new center of the city. During the Renaissance handsome gabled merchants’ houses sprouted here.

City Hall Rostock

Rostock’s arcaded town hall on Neuer Markt is as old as the square itself, going all the way back to the 13th century - possibly the oldest city hall in Germany.

Ständehaus Rostock

Numerous ornaments and turrets decorate the old brick building. The Ständehaus, built in the style of historicism, initially served as a parliament building for the knights and landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. After the estates were dissolved, it remained unused for a long time. In the GDR the building was used by the Volksmarine as a clubhouse. Today it houses the Rostock Higher Regional Court.

Restaurants, coffee shops, Italien-style gelaterias, pubs, and bars can be found galore in Rostock. Most likely every third building invites hungry and thirsty patrons to try their delicious and often inexpensive treats.

After Rostock gained city rights in 1218 the city expanded quickly. In 1265 three once separate suburbs became interlinked. During the Renaissance handsome gabled merchants’ houses sprouted on the borders of the square.

Rostock's beautiful beaches, quaint historic neighborhoods, pulsating festivals, and energetic nightlife, the North German port city of Rostock is an underrated but beautiful and rewarding place to visit. To avoid the cruise ship crowds, better come in early
spring or after mid-September.

Rostock was a thriving member of the medieval Hanseatic League, and many fine buildings still remain. Don't miss the city walls, the portals, cobblestone streets, and the elegant city hall.

The historic center is the best place to shop in Rostock.
Buses, trains, and ferries - to Denmark and Sweden, available about every
two hours - make up the excellent Rostock transport network.
A day-ticket for tram and bus costs around five Euros only.

Public transportation in Rostock is readily available with most tourists opting to choose the tram system. It comes roughly every five to ten minutes and is a quick and effective way of getting around the city. For trips outside of the immediate urban area or to nearby towns, the S-Bahn comes once every twenty minutes and feeder buses serve the nearby area.

From Hamburg Central Station you can take the train to Rostock. Buy a Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-Ticket for €22-38. With this ticket, you can travel with 5 people from Hamburg to Rostock. From Leipzig and Berlin Central Station Deutsche Bahn runs numerous connections each day. There are a couple of ICE trains a day from places
as far away as Munich.

Rostock Train Station

Warnemünde, the ‘beach town of Rostock’ is only a short bus or train trip away. From Easter on there are also boat rides available to reach Warnemünde. In the middle of the town sits an old windmill, which will be converted into apartments. Steps away was a pretty park. Cherry trees and daffodils were already blooming in early February!

I walked down a little to the west of the lighthouse and the beach became quiet and traced by a row of villas from the turn of the 20th century. On the quay, there’s a continuous line of boats, some of which have been turned into floating snack bars.

In Warnemünde’s harbor, the Alter Strom is a channel dug as long ago as 1423. For more than five centuries this was the main channel linking Rostock’s port with the Baltic Sea until the 'Neuer Strom' was dredged in 1903. On the west side of the Alter Strom is a promenade edged with charming old fishermen’s houses that are now shops and restaurants.

The sand on the Baltic Sea is powdery and sugar-white, and along the 15 kilometers are designated areas for water sports, naturists, beach sports like soccer and volleyball in summer, as well as places where you can have barbecues and campfires.

Cute little flower shops everywhere: Amazing how many of them with their cheery
colors are spread over the town.

Tax Refunds for Europe Travellers

During a recent Europe trip, I visited Dresden, Germany. While shopping at the famous, down-town Altmarkt Galerie, I saw quite a few signs about tax-free shopping and immediate tax returns. It took me a while to find their somewhat hidden tax-free counter on the first floor of this mall. (Open from 10 am to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday). Malls are closed in Germany on Sundays, as other stores are.

.
I asked for more details and found out that the minimum purchase of (non-food/beverage) an item must be at least 50.01 Euros before the (VAT) tax. These tax-free minimum purchase amounts vary in Europe. For example, in Austria, the minimum is 75 Euros.

I had seen a pair of nice, inexpensive ballerina-style shoes and when I went to the store, they had already a tax-free form available and filled it out for me. With this form in hand, I walked back to the tax-free counter. They checked my passport and handed me a kind of credit card for the small amount - 10% of my net purchase. I had to stick it into a bank computer device and was assured the money would be immediately on my credit card.
However, I had to show the purchased shoes and my tax-free form to a customs office at the airport when leaving the country.
.
Two days later at the airport in Frankfurt, I asked for the customs bureau and showed the officer these two items. They stamped it and I went to the tax-free office which was only steps from the customs bureau. The mailbox I had to drop the envelope with the stamped tax form was also just around the corner.

Years ago I had purchased a computer, worth 3,000 Euros. Would I have known about the tax-free procedure at that time, I would have saved significant more.
But in the future…

.
More Traveller Tips and Different Procedures:

 • Check-in for your flight and tell the airline staff that you would like to have your luggage back to get Customs export certification.
 • If you have only hand baggage, proceed directly to any of the custom places. Just ask the staff where the next customs office location is.
 • With your boarding pass and tagged luggage proceed to the Customs Desk and have your documents stamped.
 • If you haven’t received already a tax refund at shopping mall desks, then there are several companies at the Frankfurt Airport you might use:

Other VAT Refund Companies
Being the main VAT refund company, the Global Blue desk is just next to Customs. However, you’ll find the other VAT refund companies like Premier Tax-Free, Tax-Free Germany, and Tax-Free Worldwide opposite from the Customs desk. Other companies like Premier Tax-Free, Tax-Free Worldwide, and Tax Refund for Germany are also represented at the Frankfurt Airport.
.

Tax Refund for Travelers in the USA
When shopping as a traveler in the US, it is depending on the State you purchase in. The highest tax refunds are available in WA, TX, CA, AZ, TN, LA, AL, and NY State.

Tax refund policies can vary by state and there is no standard sales tax percentage set as well. In Texas with 8.25% sales tax, you need to purchase for at least for $150 USD in a single store or brand outlet to be eligible for the refund.

You need to show your Visa/ Passport, and an I-94 form with an entry stamp on it if holding a foreign passport.

Processing Fees:
Instant Cash: If you want instant cash it is a 50% processing fee for a tax refund.

Check / PayPal: If you want a check or can get a refund to PayPal, then it is 35% of the tax refund. Also, you will be charged $4 USD for every single store or brand purchases.

Refund Locations:
Both US Citizens and non-US citizens can claim a tax refund at all major international airport terminals at the tax refund desk. Check at the airport for the details on the terminal. If you are a non-US citizen, then you can even claim tax refunds at certain mall locations. Check the State website for the exact locations.

Duplicate Receipt / re-prints:
When you buy your item, request a duplicate receipt or re-print of receipt. This can be used by you for a warranty in your home country.

Take a Photo of the Original Receipt:
Also, take a picture of the original receipt and if requested by the warranty location outside of the US, then you can use the photo and the duplicate receipt.

Register for Warranty:
If you are buying an electronic item and if there is an option to register online, do it right away, as long as you have the original receipt.

.
Conclusion:
Research your tax-free options before your trip. Compare any fees that are charged by them. Once there, make sure you have the latest info, get the locations of the tax-free bureaus, the customs offices, and their opening hours. Before you head to the airport, download a map, so that you easily find your way to the places you need to get the refund.
